Who's in the Lead?

 

Let’s take a look at the Australian Social Media statistics for June 2016. 

June witnessed the well-covered news of Microsoft’s acquisition of Linkedin. This may be one of the reasons for LinkedIn’s increase in users this month. 

Twitter is still yet to encounter any significant growth after patiently waiting for over a year. The social media company continues to face issues retaining inactive users. 

Two significant changes this month in the social media realm include Tumblr's loss of 100,000 Australian users in since May and secondly on a more positive note LinkedIn's gain of 300,000 users.

4. Instagram – 5,000,000 - Monthly Active Australian Users (Facebook/ Instagram data)

6. LinkedIn – 3,500,000
7. Twitter – 2,800,000 - Monthly Active Australian Users approx.
8. WhatsApp – 2,400,000 - Active Australian Users
9. TripAdvisor – 2,350,000
10. Blogspot- 2,050,000
11. Snapchat – 2,000,000 - Monthly Active Australian Users approx.
12. Tinder – 2,000,000 - Australian Users (estimation)
13. Yelp – 1,600,000
14. Flickr – 550,000
15. Pinterest – 290,000
16. Reddit – 100,000
17. MySpace – 80,000
18. Google Plus – 60,000 - Monthly Active Australian users approx. (estimation)
19. StumbleUpon – 40,000

A few other highlights from include:

  • On June 3, LinkedIn introduced Premium Insights. The brand new feature, which has been added to the premium experience, gives users exclusive data about companies that interest them.
  • On June 9, Facebook introduced 360 photos. Users can create a panoramic image on their phone (or capture a 360-degree photo using a 360 photo app or camera) and share it to Facebook. 
  • On June 15, Twitter made its Live button for Periscope available to everyone using its Android and iOS apps. Twitter users have the option to select Live when composing a Tweet to begin recording a periscope video.
  • On June 21, Instagram announced that their user base had hit 500 million.

Periscope

Launched in 2015, Periscope is a live video streaming app for iOS and Android. The app was acquired by Twitter before its launch. 

Periscope users have the option to tweet out a link to their Live Stream, they can also choose whether or not to make their video public or viewable to only certain users.

Periscope has grown exponentially in just one year. As of March 2016 the company has gained more than 200 million broadcasts.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jimmy Fallon and Mark Cuban are fans of the live-streaming service. 

 

Delicious (stylised Del.icio.us)

 

Delicious is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks.

Delicious used to be a big in 2004, however in recent years the service has declined with more users becoming less active. The company was acquired by Yahoo in 2005, some even calling it another of ‘Yahoo’s mismanaged acquisitions’.

 

Digg

Digg has been around since 2010 however was re-launched in 2012 announcing, “Digg delivers the most interesting and talked-about stories on the Internet”. 

According to their website Digg are a New York-based team of about 25 engineers, designers, and editors. Digg rave that that they provide “the most relevant and compelling content to millions of users a month. Using proprietary data sources and a crack editorial team, we cut through the clutter of the Internet and make sense of the noise so you don’t have to.”

Any user of Digg before 2012 can still find their data at digg.com/archive.

They have 8 million active users globally. However this is a small portion when compared with Facebook’s 1.65 Billion active users.  

 

StumbleUpon

Founded in 2002, StumbleUpon is a discovery engine that selects recommended web content to its users. Its features allow users to discover and rate Web pages, photos and videos that are personalised to their tastes.

The App launched in 2012 with big success. However, in recent years the company is now struggling to stay alive, with funding scarce and trouble maintaining employees.

In 2016 StumbleUpon has around 30 million users worldwide however it’s unknown how many are active.
