The 2011 Super Bowl ads have been talked a lot by the public but not for the positive. Most of them were confusing and looked like they were put together by students like the Coca-Cola siege ad. With an average of 3 million dollars per 30 seconds, the adverts were viewed in 53.3 million households, with a preliminary 46.0 U.S. household rating.

Another negative point is the HomeAway commercial, the company spent millions of dollars buying a spot on the Super Bowl, worked very hard to create great advertising and now are forced to apologise in a bid to limit the damage. The HomeAway ad featured a baby flying into a plate glass window. The spot portrayed the sad state of the Tibetan people before noting that Groupon has great discounts at restaurants that serve Tibetan food.

The best commercial being the Volkswagen, ‘The Force’ by unanimous public opinion (30 millions views on YouTube in less than 15 days), features a pint-sized Darth Vader looking to work his evil ways on subjects that just won’t cooperate… that is, until a certain vehicle pulls into the driveway…

Make sure you watch all the Super Bowl commercials here ››

And this one is a personal favourite:

3d Projection Mapping offers new levels of impact and creativity to captivate audiences and can create surreal landscapes by projecting images on objects. As you watch the video, see how much buzz is created as people record and take photos of the event via their mobile phone. For those of you who are not familiar with the term or marketing technique, “Video Projection Mapping” is an exciting new projection application that can turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. Specialised software is used to warp and mask the projected image to make it fit perfectly on irregularly shaped objects. When done right, the end result is a dynamic projection installation that transcends ordinary video projection. This is a great example of a Christmas theme projection on the facade of ‘de Bijenkorfs’ building in Rotterdam. The projection surface was 84 meters wide by 20 meters high. The christmas projection ran during the special Christmas shopping nights on December 21, 22 and 23. Be great to see some of this in Sydney as permanent installations.

One thing I really can work on in terms of design is my typography. Creating great typography is most of the time seen as an art rather than a science. It is a domain growing stronger and stronger by the year and has proven to be a very effective tool when used wisely. There are close to no rules to follow however, it is important to understand and apply design principles for better results when combining fonts and design. Below are some example i have found along the way that have inspired me to work more on my typography.

And here’s another idea I wonder why no-one had thought about earlier. Invented by the young designer Denis Bostandzic, as the name suggests, the Spoonachos are Mexican chips shaped like little spoons. A simple but clever design improvement which would make guacamole and spicy sauces dipping a lot more efficient and safe! The concept is still in development stage but you can find out more about this tasty idea by following the link below.

Part tri of my collection of best film clips is about to begin – PUMP IT UP!!

Daft Punk – Da Funk

A great clip from the genius that is the Punk. I suppose the dog is down on his luck with the broken leg and the wandering around alone. Amongst the awkward monotony he trudges through things look as if they are about to look up when he runs into the woman of his past and hopefully future. Unfortunately it inevitably all comes undone and resets to the beginning, all because of his stupid radio.

Daft Punk – Da Funk

A Perfect Circle- Judith

This clip is directed by the great David Fincher. Director of Fight Club, Se7en and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a man who demands perfection and is known to do copious amounts of takes. This video was filmed over a number of days, one shot in particular took three hours to set up! The section where Paz the bass player put her hair in a pony tail was sped up to make it fit within the break because she couldn’t do it fast enough. They figured that out after 18 takes.

The clip looks superb, a perfect example of irony. Fincher took hours shooting, getting everything perfect and then made it look like it had been dragged on the ground and left in a basement for 10 years. It’s shot with an extremely narrow depth of field for Film. Fincher used his bag of tricks on Judith just like he did his films. The technique he most known for is after developing the film and withdrawing the silver nitrate, he draws the film back through it. Leaving the blacks pitch black making for high natural contrast. Enjoy!

BLUR – Coffee and TV

There’s really not much to say about this film clip. It’s a simple love and life story shown over 6 minutes….between two milk cartons.

The White Stripes – Fell in Love with a Girl

I friggin hate The White Stripes!!! Let that be known! Meg White cannot play drums and Jack White sounds like a goat pepped up on PCP, I get as much enjoyment from listening to their music as i do putting my hand into a blender!! But admittedly they have some great film clips, this one is no exception. Initially the whole clip was supposed to be stop go animation using Lego but in the end, the more complicated shots we computer animated to save time.
